Hello! I%26#39;m travelling to Normandy in October with my husband and while we want to take in Mont St Michel we%26#39;d actually like to stay somewhere not so commercial. Ideally we%26#39;d like somewhere with a view of the Mont.
Also - forgive my ignorance - but do you have to have a guide for the visit to the Mont?
Many thanks.

For a (rather distant) view of the Mont Saint Michel you could either pick the Brittany port of Cancale (famous for its oyster beds) and visit nearby Saint Malo, or the interesting old resort of Granville (Normandy) located on a cape. However, MSM is OK later in the day, when the tour groups are gone.

There%26#39;s a good view of the Mont from the road that leads up to the causeway, where there are a number of hotels.
It%26#39;s a good idea to take a guided tour of the Abbey precincts; they%26#39;re extensive, and dark in some places. You can always leave the tour, wander a bit if you wish, and then go back to the group. We had an excellent guide with very good English.

We are going there, also in Oct. Could the writer who mentioned a good tour guide give the name of the tour company? We will be staying for a week in Connelles and will have a car. I need to know the best things to see in that time frame. So far Band of Brothers tour with Battlebus sounds wonderful. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also we are staying at Club Sunterra. Does anyone know anything about it?
Thanks so much

Thanks guys... I%26#39;d also be interested in any good tour guides you could recommend.

Tour guides hired by the Abbey are available at the gatehouse when you get up to the top of the path--tours go in groups. I don%26#39;t know about private guides; sorry. There are fairly frequent tours with English-speaking guides.
