I want to spend 7 - 10 days in the south of France, especially Provence, next year. Are there good tours to that region or is it better to travel on your own in a rented car? My French is minimal.

You can do fine in a rental car--don%26#39;t worry about the French, or lack thereof. With 7 to 10 days you can see most of the principal sights and have a wonderful time going where you want when you want, as opposed to being herded with a tour.
First off: get a copy of the Michelin Green Guide to Provence, and also the one for the Côte d%26#39;Azur is you plan to visit the eastern portion. The Guides include recommended itineraries, making it very easy to figure out where to go and the necessary time frame. You can also use mappy.com and viamichelin.com to check driving distances and approximate times.

My husband and I just returned from 8 days in Provence. We loved the freedom of having a rental car and being on our own schedule. We speak almost no French and it didn%26#39;t seem to be much of a problem...some people in the stores in the smaller villages didn%26#39;t speak English, but most people do. We spent the first 5 nights just outside of St Remy (Chateau des Alpilles which was wonderful!) and that was a great base for day trips. St Remy is big enough to have good restaurants and shopping (don%26#39;t miss the Wednesday morning market!) but small enough to wander around on foot. Our favorite day trips were the hilltowns of the Luberon, especially Lourmarin. I noticed that you are traveling alone... it may be a bit hard to navigate a map and drive at the same time. If you do choose to do the rental car route, maybe invest in a GPS. The road signs aren%26#39;t always clear.

Re your French -
Spend an hour or two learning the courtesies, the numbers 0 to 10 - I know the French say one hundred ten for room 110 - but they understand when you say salle un, un, zero, and they really appreciate your effort.
It sounds like a fantastic trip - bon voyage.
