My wife and I will be on our way via train on Sunday October 22 to San Sebastian from Paris. Would like to stop off in or around Bordeaux. Would appreciate any advice. Prefer a small town on the rail line to just relax, eat local and chill. Wine tour would be nice, but not essential.....Thanks.

The town of Bordeaux itself is very pleasant. My wife and I spent a pleasurable two nights there a quite a few years ago. The tourism office has (or at least had) classically educated guides that gave walking tours. This was an excellent morning with only four of us in the tour group: the guide explained all the differences in the architecture, gave us the outline of the history of the port and of wine making in general, and showed us a wine warehouse museum. The tour ended with lunch at an excellent wine and cheese shop.
