hotel st-jacques

Planning a week long trip in November and I%26#39;d like to book a room at the hotel st-jacques after reading all these rave reviews. For anyone that%26#39;s stayed there, can you tell me the difference between a:

double room?

standard double room?

superior double room?

aside from the price that is...thank you!~

wanderlust49, I stayed there in November and I loved it !! The rooms are nice and very ornate with molded high ceilings and many have frescoes on the walls. We booked the standard double room and also the superior double room. The very cheapest doubles are on the sixth (top) floor, one floor above where the lift will take you, so you have to walk up. The ceilings are slanted and the rooms are small. The standard double (one price up) is a smaller room on the lower 5 floors. We had the fifth floor I think (french 4th). The room was very small, but fine. The superior double rooms are much larger and many of them could be used as triples. Some are just large with two twins pushed together, but the one we had had three twins, two pushed together. One problem I had in my room was access to an outlet to do my hair with my curling iron. I had to unplug my TV, open the bathroom door that had a mirror on the back and stand about 5 feet from the mirror. The only other negative were the thin walls which are common in these old small hotels I loved that we had two windows that opened up and we could step out on a mini balcony that ran straight across the front of the building on this floor. The street noise is a little loud on Rue des Ecoles during the day and early evening, but is pretty quiet very late at night.

Overall, I loved the hotel. I loved Bridgett at the front desk and she got me out of a serious mess the morning of departure when the shuttle guy left my most important bag sitting on the curb in front of the hotel. Bridget tied it all up for me, called my bag a taxi (yes we were too cheap to take a taxi, but our bag got to go first class), and got it to the airport in time that we actually made our flight !!

If for any reason the hotel is full, I can also recommend hotel College de France around the corner on Rue Thenard.

Good luck !

THANK YOU for the very thorough description! That was exactly what I was looking for. Based on what you said, I think I may go for a standard double. Society has engrained the idea in my head that the higher up the better, but doesn%26#39;t seem so in this case. I don%26#39;t really mind walking one flight up from the 5th floor but I wouldn%26#39;t want to be in a claustrophobic room for 8 days!

And thank you for going the extra mile and recommending another hotel should this one be booked up. I can%26#39;t wait to go and report back to this forum. =)

Wander, a few years ago a friend and I stayed in the St. Jacques %26quot;famous%26quot; twin room with wrap-around balcony. I think it was on the 5th floor, perhaps #34. The views were incredible and the 5th arrondisement was a nice introduction to Paris for us. I think most doubles are twins pushed together, so you might want to ask if this room is available.

I will say, however, that we found the street to be incredibly noisy at night. The Sorbonne is just minutes away and the 5th is filled with students. Bring ear plugs.

Have a great trip!

I went on the hotel webpage and found their email address so I sent them an email about 4 days ago and have not got a reply yet.

Is the link, http://www.hotel-saintjacques.com , the best way to get in touch with them? I don%26#39;t want to come off as pushy for writing them again in case they%26#39;re really busy or something.

Also, I notice on their webpage that there is a booking section but there is no padlock symbol so I%26#39;m wondering how safe it is to put my credit card information in...

It could be that your email is being rejected by the hotel%26#39;s system as spam. It%26#39;s occured with my emailed requests before. Or it could be that the hotel staff is busy or on vacation although it%26#39;s high season now. However, you may want to either use fax or call them next. If you want to resend your email, it%26#39;s not being pushy. Just explain that you are following up on your original request as you had not received a reply yet. If you have a second email address perhaps you should use that one.
