Questions about Lyon

I%26#39;d like to ask some advice on Lyon.

If you had only 2 days to see Lyon, what would be the highlights to visit for those 2 days?

Would it be advisable to go on foot? I%26#39;ve read many comments that Lyon can see easily seen by walking?

Does Lyon offer a hop-on, hop off bus? How much would it costs?

What area/district has the best choice of budget hotels? I am talking in the area of 80 Euro below per night for a double room with private shower.

I also read about a %26quot;Visit Lyon Pass%26quot;, what website can I see more info about this?

Thank you all for your help!

When I visited Lyon I purchased a day pass for the city transportation system. I believe it cost less than 5 euros and could be used on the subway, trams, buses, trolleys and funiculaire. I don%26#39;t recall if it is offered from the machines but I bought it at subway entrances where you will find route maps. I suggest buying one for your first day to go all over, especially since you%26#39;ll want to take the funiculaire up the hill to see the Roman ruins and Fourviere. The next day you will know whether another pass is needed. I wanted to save wear and tear on my feet so I could wander in places of interest, therefore I often took the subway just to go 6 blocks or so over areas I had already explored. It is very convenient since you don%26#39;t have to walk through endless tunnels like in Paris or in other big cities.

I know that I read Rick Steves%26#39; reviews of budget hotels in Lyon but I don%26#39;t remember the title of that particular book since he has written several about France.

I can%26#39;t advise you on highlights since it was a nostalgia trip for me, having studied there many years ago. I did not look at the city from the perspective of a tourist, rather I wanted to revisit old haunts. However, in very general terms, close to Perrache station is the neighborhood with art galleries and antique stores, after the Place Bellecour (spelling??) the downtown is very beautiful and elegant with wonderful shopping and cafes, close to the Saone River is a very tourist oriented area of restaurants, across the Saone is the Old City, overlooking the Old City you have the Roman ruins and Fourviere, and on top of the hill overlooking the tip of downtown by the Opera you have a neighborhood which is more like a small village. I took the subway to the top and loved walking down the hill. On the other side of the Loire River you have the main indoor market and a beautiful urban park.

I hope this helps.

I meant the market and park are on the other side of the Rhone River, not the Loire.

We%26#39;ve just got back from our holiday %26amp; stayed in Lyon for 2 nights on our return journey. We had our dog with us so were tied to walking round %26amp; believe me, we did a lot of walking, Lyon is a vast city. By the end of the day we couldn%26#39;t have taken another step!

The tourist info site is http://www.lyon-france.com/ %26amp; you should be able to get the info you need from this. There%26#39;s an accommodation section on it which gives you options on which district to stay in.

We saw an open topped tour bus %26amp; there were also cycle taxis, like rickshaws, for seeing the sights.

One tip I will give you - for a panoramic view of Lyon, take the funicular up to Fouviere - fantastic - you can see for miles! While you%26#39;re up there visit the Notre Dame de Fouviere - it%26#39;s beautiful. Just to one side, you will see it as you leave the station, is the mini Eiffel tower.

Have fun - we intend to go back for a short break without our dog so we can see the sights more easily.
