Restaurant Alert....

Everytime I%26#39;m here, I try to go to a random restaurant I know nothing about. Sometimes I regret it, and sometimes I find a new favorite place. Tonight I got lucky and stumbled into a place in Montmartre that I think is good enough to share....

It%26#39;s called Le Dürer Restaurant, 19, rue Yvonne-le-Tac, in Montmartre (18eme), just 200m from the bottom of the finiculaire.

They had three prix fixe menus at 15, 21 and 29 euros. We chose the 29 euros menu because it came with a kir royale before dinner and salad and cheese before dessert. The entrees and plats choices were very similar on the 21 euro menu (about 8 choices each), but we opted for the extras.

After we placed our order, we were treated to a small offering of mixed snackables, almost like chex mix. That was followed immediately by the kir royales.

I started with the Moules Farcies, which were excellent. 10 of them, cooked perfectly. Just crispy enough without being overcooked. Sherry had escargots (12 of them...not the skimpy 6 that most places serve), and she loved them. Then I had the Magret de Canard, which was offered with a choice of Roquefort or Poivre, and I opted for the Poivre. Sherry ordered the Grilled Salmon with Bearnaise. Both were served with thick sliced potatoes that were fried like potato chips. I ordered my duck rosé, but it came out a little too done for me....but it was still excellent. The sauce au poivre was excellent, both on the duck and the potatoes. Sherry said her salmon was very good as well. After dinner, we were served our salad and cheese, which was a nice sampling of bitter greens and 3 cheeses. One was definitely brie, and I couldn%26#39;t tell you what the others were, although all were soft white cheeses. Just the right amount. Then we were treated to our dessert. I had mousse au chocolat and Sherry had creme brulee. Both were very tasty. After dinner we had coffee. Un double expresso for me and a cafe creme for here. When they brought our check to us, it came with marinated cherries in some liquor I didn%26#39;t recognize, but it was the perfect treat to end the meal. Overall, especially for the price, we both thought it was just outstanding. The service was friendly, not rushed, but attentive, and we really felt liked we%26#39;d dined at some starred resto instead of the quaint little place we stumbled into. The food was good. Really good. Not haute cuisine, and probably not up to par with food snob standards, but for a menu at 29 euros, considering that it was four courses with the kir royale, it really was outstanding, and one I%26#39;d rate very high for someone shopping for dinner in that price range.

The 4 course meal for each of us, with kir royale, a 50cl pot of Merlot, a bottle of 1664 and two coffees came to 78,50 euros.

I%26#39;m not a food writer (obviously) so I can%26#39;t describe the meal with as much detail as I would like, but I hope you can grasp what I%26#39;m trying to impart, and if you%26#39;re looking for dinner that has it all for less than 40 euros a person, definitely check the place out.

It sounds like a nice place for dining, Arrow. It%26#39;s affordable, and they definitely have things that I could see myself ordering. However, Mr. Shoesy and I simply fell in love with the salads at Relais du Gascon, and we can%26#39;t stop talking about them, so I know that whenever we get to Montmartre again, we%26#39;ll be dining there.

Arrow - once again, thanks for your post.

Thanks so much for that. When I was in Paris for the first (and so far only time) finding somewhere for dinner under 30 euro was difficult. We certainly got taken for in alot of the typical tourist areas. I had a meal in a place I can not remember the name. They had a pretty blackboard out the front and it was very welcoming. But the food was disgraceful, and for the most part inedible. I am hoping very much to go back for a second visit in 2007 and so I have taken note of your experience and thank you for sharing it. Its very much appreciated.

Great recommendation and description - we are staying in Montmartre 15-18 Nov so I%26#39;ve added Le Dürer to our list
