Hiya
We are leaving a week Mon to drive down to the South of France. We are leaving the UK and arriving into Boulogne about 9 in the morning. We are then driving down to the Dijon area and stopping the night before carring on driving down to Les Issambres. We are taking the Toll roads all the way down. Does anybody know how long it will take us from Boulogne to Dijon and then how long it will take from Dijon to Les Issambres. Will the Toll roads be fairly quiet at this time of year?
Many Thanks
Heather

If you use www.viamichelin.com. You can put in your departure and arrival points and it will come up with the times, tolls, speed cameras etc. The roads will just have normal traffic on them. The great holiday season is over.
Have a good trip.

www.viamichelin.co.uk will tell all.

Just so you are not confused the two websites mentioned are the same.
Just checked Boulogne to Dijon should be about 5.5 hours without stops or problems.

Hi Heather,
I would visit the web site for the french autoroute system:-
www.autoroutes.fr
This will give you route planning, time and distance, toll costs, rest areas, real time and predicted traffic conditions.
It splits the system into the various operating regions but all have an English translation.
Beware that some of the route planners might try to route you via Paris (unlikely) but just a warning.
The autoroute had its own radio traffic station (107.7 FM) which as well as playing an eclectic selection of music also has real time traffic updates in French and English.
At this time of year thr traffic should not be too bad - the only real problem area is Lyon in the south - it has a direct route through the centre or you can go around the bypass. The bypass seems to take forever but the route through the centre goes through two tunnels - these can cause long delays if a vehicle breaks down in them - listen to the traffic station above as that will tell you the conditions.
Do not be tempted to exceed the autoroute speed limits - the French no longer do as there are heavy on the spot fines for doing so (including an escort to the nearest ATM to get cash if you do not have enough to pay).
Finally where are you staying near Dijon - we are looking for a good hotel for next August to break our drive down to Provence?
Have a great trip

Actually driving South this summer I was amazed at how much the majority of French kept to the speed limit. Obviously as the limits do not apply to Belgians they were zooming along and as all the Dutch were towing something that slowed them down. But I did notice it.
By the way Snowwhite my journey times this summer were just under 9 hours Calais to Macon Sud with 3 diversions off of the motorway to vineyards, then Macon Sud to Cavalaire (just west of Ste Maxime) 5 hours. I travelled on a Tuesday and Wednesday at the end July with just one driver.

Thank you all for your advice tips etc!
Boucheboy - we haven%26#39;t booked a hotel yet around Dijon, we are going to leave it and see how far we get. Hopefully we are going to try and make it to Chalon sur-Saone, just South of Dijon. Have found a few hotels around there so will let you know where we stayed when we return.
We have been looking at most of the routes and they do take us around the outskirts of Paris? then down the A6 to Chalon sur- saone. Is it quicker to avoid Paris all together? If so which direction should we head for from Boulogne?
Thanks

From Boulogne take the N42 (appears to be dual all the way) to meet up with the A26. Then Reims, Dijon, Lyon (use the by-pass unless the overhead signs say otherwise), south south south, Aix-en-Provence. I would exit at Le Muy down to Ste Maxime turn left and follow the coast to Les Issambres.
The French motorway signs on the whole are far more accurate than in the UK so if they should suddenly suggest going through Lyon trust them but I doubt that will be the case. Another point as you take the Lyon by-pass make sure you are always in the lane under the sign of where you want to go. In your case this will be Marseille. The lanes do divert off. It is a really easy journey - so speaks somone with 19 years experience.
Have a great time I will be down in the area first week in October.
