A day visit to Brittany from Mont St. Michel - where to go?

We%26#39;ve seen these lovely images of Brittany during the French film at Epcot, and we are staying 3 nights at Mont St. Michel (which we love, we were there last year). We plan to go one day to Bayeaux/Omaha Beach area again, but what about Brittany, not too far (within 2 hours) of the Mont?

In the film at Epcot, it included a small church which was on the cliffs - but I don%26#39;t know if there is anything like that (small villages on the water) there. Of course, there are plenty of cliff areas in the Omaha Beach area we hadn%26#39;t ever gotten to last year.

Even if not on the water - somewhere a little traditional, a little touristy is okay.

Thanks. :)

From Mont St-Michel you can head over to the medieval town of Vitré and then to Fougères, the remains of one of the most massive castles in Europe. Impressive it is! The town is pleasant as well. After Fougères you could drive along the Emerald Coast to the oyster town of Cancale and then visit the walled town fo St-Malo and Dinard, a lovely resort town just opposite. Dinard has a beautiful beach and an interesting walk along the cliffs, with gardens in the style of various regions of France.

Wow, that was quick! Thank you, those are definitely the type of places that we are looking for. I am guessing the villages themselves will be small and the castles and such easy to find.

Hopefully someday we%26#39;ll spend a little more time in the area, but now we will just have the 3 nights (2 full days) on the Mont. We missed the high tides last year and wanted to go back again (it%26#39;s so beautiful there!)

I would agree with much of what Underhill has said, although personally I found Cancale somewhat disappointing. Dinard is great with all facilities. You can even lunch at tables overlooking the beach.

Some more ideas are the town of Dinan, not to be confused with Dinard. Great walks around the town and down by the river.

The resorts of St Cast le Guildo, Erquy and Le Val Andre have great beaches. There are good walks around Cap Frehal. All within an hour or two of Mont St Michel.

Thanks, everyone - there are so many choices! We are hitting 4 places on this trip (London and surrounding area, Paris, Mont St. Michel/D-Day Beaches/Briittany and Edinburgh) and it%26#39;s like planning 4 separate trips! - we did a similar trip last year, with Munich instead of Edinburgh, but are doing so many new things even so.

I was just so taken by Brittany in the film. Next time, hopefully we%26#39;ll have a little more time there and perhaps finally make our way towards the south of France and Lyon - France is such a great country. :)

I highly reccomend Dinar. I stayed a week in this lovely town while husband was bicycling the Paris-Brest-Paris. Be sure to enjoy the bucket of steamed mussels w/ apple cider. Take in a cider farm off the main tourist road - very interesting.

We will be back in 2007 for another week.

Dinard is a very nice resort town with a good beach. There%26#39;s also an interesting walk around the cliffs that features gardens in quite a few styles, including Mediterranean.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their ideas! My husband wasn%26#39;t ready to leave too early from the hotel for a day trip (we were staying on Mont St. Michel) - but we had a lovely, lovely time for an afternoon in Dinard. What a gorgeous place! It was overcast, but wonderful - we walked around the cliffs, I found mollusks (I am not sure I%26#39;ve ever seen shells when they were alive), and found a tiny little family-run restaurant with just a handful of tables which served good food (they didn%26#39;t speak any English, though we figured everything out okay!)

I hope to visit Dinard again, I wish we had time to visit St. Malo as well that day. I also read today that Alfred Hitchcock based the house in Psycho on one of the homes in Dinard on the cliffs.
