Fort de Fermont

Although a distance from Verdun, 6miles from Longwy- near Luxembourg, a visit to Fort de Fermont is highly recommended as it is a part of the Maginot line that saw action in WW2. Mainly open on weekend afternoons the fort is run by an enthusiastic band of volunteers. Outside the fort there is a small covered hangar with vehicles/weapons/relics of the fort. On our visit there was a pop/rock concert, food and drink stalls and some odd fire eaters- who kept popping up. Also there was a selection of US army jeeps that you could pay to ride on for a shortish trip in the local area, with the drivers in US army uniform. You have to go on the escorted tours spoken in french, with leaflets in english(+ other languages) if required.

The tour took about 1.5 hours. You get some history before you descend down into the depths of the fort seeing the underground railway and various blast doors. You start with the ammunition depots, see the kitchens / barrack rooms generators etc before getting on the train and travelling 1 mile to the battery position. Here you see the guns and where a french soldier was killed in the fighting before going outside to see the exterior and are demonstrated the pop-up turrets for machine guns. You take the train back and see a large selection of uniforms weapons news articles from the forts heyday, and yet more rooms. The guides are young and enthusiastic, luckily I speak french, but a lot of the fort is self explanitory if you don%26#39;t. Not the easiest place to find but there are signs occasionally normally placed so you can only see them in your rear view mirrors, but if you are interested in WW2 history then this is a visit you must do!!

My husband and I are planning a trip to Fort de Fermont and wanted to know if anyone has been to fort Immerhoff or Fort Hackenburg which are very close by. Do you recommend and know what hours they are open? Any other can%26#39;t miss sites?
