Hello TA Paris lovers. I lived on this board a few years back, planning my trip to Paris in April of 2004. Anyway, I moved on (other trips to other places), but I loved Paris and missed it SO much that we%26#39;ve decided to go back for the Christmas break. Yea! We%26#39;re taking our 3 teenagers this time...they%26#39;ve never been. I am so excited.
Anyway, there is a point to this rambling...I found a 4(!) bedroom apt in the 15th that%26#39;s pretty resonable (most apartments are booked solid). Can anyone give me some ideas of what it%26#39;s like in this area? I don%26#39;t think we ventured there last time...we did spend some time in the 7th and the 14th, but the 15th remains a mystery. Do you think this would be a good area for 3 teenagers? There are 2 Metro stops near the apt (Commerce and La Motte Piquet). We%26#39;ll probably do all the regular toursity things. I don%26#39;t mind the metro, but I want the kids to enjoy the area we%26#39;re staying in, too.
There%26#39;s another apartment available in the 2nd, but it%26#39;s not quite as nice.
Please help!!!
PS It%26#39;s great to be home :)

The 15th is a really neighborhood kind of place. The only arron without a single monument, so thier tend to be less tourists. Also the most populated arron. in the city.
You%26#39;ll be walking distance to the Eiffel Tower, but will need to metro it for the rest, which is not too bad, as Motte Piquet has two lines. The rue du Commerce is a nice commercial street with lots of good shopping for the teens.

Thank you so much Phread!
I was just browsing the previous posts (I have a lot of catching up to do), and I saw your reply to a similar question. I totally agree with you...I want my kids to see the sights, but it%26#39;s really important to me that they get a feel for the less-touristy areas and to %26quot;live the life%26quot; as best they can (fully realizing that it%26#39;s just a week on vacation!) I just wanted to make sure that there was enough %26quot;going on%26quot; in the area, cafe and shop-wise, etc. When my husband and I visited in 2004 we stayed on the Ille St. Louis...and ended up hanging out in Montparnasse and the Rue Daguerre :) But then again, it was nice to be in such a central location. Decisions!!
I also saw that there is ice skating at the Gare Montparnasse. My youngest son is a hockey player and will be thrilled to skate in Paris! Do you know how I can find out some more info on that?

there is more info in this forum, but basically it is an outdoor rink and you just show up. it is free AND you get to skip the lines if you bring your own skiates, otherwise it was about 5E last year.
There will also be free merry go rounds throughout the city and a rink in front of the City Hall. There is a third rink on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower, but it was way too small and crowded for my tastes.

We booked the apartment in the 15th - I heard from a good friend of mine who lives in Paris and he gave the thumbs up as well (although he prefers a little more %26quot;funk%26quot; in his neighborhoods, he thought the apartment was cool and that we%26#39;d like the area)
So thanks for the recommend...can I be a pest and ask you recommend some good, reasonable restaurants/bistros in the area? We%26#39;ll probably be out and about every day, but it would be nice to know that there are some nice places nearby. As I mentioned in a previous post, my kids have very sophisticated tastes for teenagers and we%26#39;re total foodies - a dangerous combination when in Paris :)

Hey sis --
I am the mother of a foodie and the aunt who created a foodie nephew travelling around Europe - I%26#39;ll tell you what has worked for me --
On the day of arrival a neighbourhood scouting trip to locate the bakery, the supermarket, the pastry shop, greengrocers, etc. and to buy breakfast groceries and snacks - with 3 teens you%26#39;d better really stock up on the snacks.
We always eat breakfast at home - and a good big one - you%26#39;ll end up with more affordable lunch tabs. I%26#39;ve always travelled during warm weather, so we picnicked at least every second day -- I doubt that will be an option for you at Christmas time.
Remind your teens that tap water is perfectly safe throughout Western Europe. If you have to buy bottled water stock up at the Monoprix or whichever supermarket is nearest - buy a dozen small bottles and then the super cheap big ones to refill the small ones - if you carry two small bottles each, you ought to make it through the day.
