I am staying near metro Chateau de Vincennes, and I heard I have to walk to metro from hotel at least 15 min. Now I am thinking to rent a car, but is it easy to drive around Paris? How about parking?
Any comments appreciated.

Hard to drive, hard to park and expensive to park. A 15 min. walk sound easy enough, if not, get a taxi.

a car within central Paris ?..you joke. Driving in the core of the city is difficult and parking even more difficult and expensive. The 15 min walk that you are concerned about- nothing compared to the time it will take you to park, walk from the parking space let alone the frustration. Dont even think about it!

Like in other large cities, traffic is congested and parking is expensive (20 Euros and up)
You will have to go in a parking lot as streets are on a meter.
I think a taxi in and out of town would be a better idea if you do not want to walk to metro.
Take it for example to Holiday Inn Republique - or any large hotel not too far from Vincennes - and when you return you will also find a taxi to grab at the hotel.

Hi Lila
I don%26#39;t know what the purpose of your stay will be - but if it is anything like mine, walking will be what you do from you wake up till you return exhausted to your hotel - exhausted, but happy and full of exciting impressions and experiences.
As long as you sit down in the metro tube (which is of course also a part of the real Parisian feel) - there is not much to see, except your fellow travellers. It is up in the streets and allys and squares and parks that you will discover Paris.
So the last 15 minute walk back to the hotel will be nothing. But if you could post the exact adress then I would love to check out for you if there is a bus going past close by your hotel. I have begun to use the buses more in Paris - you avoid all the stair-climbing in the metrostations and you get to see more.
You could look up www.ratp.fr - choose Plan des lignes - then Bus - then Reseau Bus Paris - and you will get a map of the buslines. There is also an interactive map.

I will add my voice to the concert of those who warn you about terrible parking conditions and traffic congestion. L ila, bear also in mind that 85% of cars in Europe have manual transmissions - you may not be used to it, especially in a city weher one changes speeds everytime.

Gitte, spare your time :-) bus lines 56 and 46 serve %26quot;Château de Vincennes%26quot;. Both have nice routes inside Paris, especially the 56. Until 2001, the buses of line 56 had an open rear end... but it%26#39;s not possible anymore with the newer ones.
Those open buses were on lines 29 and 56.... and they were cooooool !

like the others, if youre there for tourism i dont suggest you a car. its not easy, there are plenty of little streets, youd better have good eyes to read the names, and you can turn for an hour to find a park place (and most of the parkings in center paris are about 2 euros/hour). youre going to get very stressed if you drive in paris. as a parisian im ok driving here but when i go to ny for ex i never rent a car, as a tourist its far more easy to take the metro.

I think that%26#39;s a no then. I agree entirely. Presumably you are going for a holiday and not to get stressed out trying to deal with the Paris traffic. You will see it at it%26#39;s best around the Arc D%26#39;Triomphe (sorry if that is spelt wrong). Maybe that should be worst. My daughter and I just sat and watched for a while it was hilarious, but a relief not to be in it. There were one or two people even trying to cross the street instead of using the underpass. They must have had a deathwise! Happy walking, bussing or training. Forget the car!

Just like all the others that posted, I have to say that driving in Paris would be a big mistake! It is at a very hectic pace. Most people have mopeds, motocycles or small %26quot;smart cars%26quot; ! Walking was much more enjoyable and Metro very easy to use and it would be much less expensive than renting a car and parking! On our first visit to Paris we just watched the drivers go around the Arc de Triomphe. It was amazing that there were no accidents............

I really think we should start promoting %26#39;traffic round the Arc de Triomphe%26#39; as a must-see visitor attraction. Like others we were totally mesmerized , and our children were well entertained, counting time between horn blasts (4 seconds maximum), undented cars (minimal) and non-Paris registrations (about 3 in the time we were watching). We had our car for the trip - and it was safely parked in a hotel car park beyond the peripherique!
