Family of 4 - myself, my wife and our 2 children aged 8 and 6, wanting to live in France from February 2008. I am keen on living in the northern part of Aquitaine around Bourdeau, the Poitou-Charentes region or maybe the southern part / Bay of Biscay side of Brittany / Pays de la Loire.
We are planning to stay for 3-6 months (I am sorting the visa%26#39;s out) so I am keen to know if anyone else has done something similar and what your experience was. I am interested particularly in costs of living in the south western regions. Does anyone have a comparision for cost of living or is anyone able to advise costs for this area (in US$ or Euro%26#39;s) for things like rent (3 bedroom apartment / house, etc), average meal cost, cost of a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs, 1.5L bottled water, a beer, etc. Eagerly awaiting your responses.

I can%26#39;t answer any of your specific questions but because we have friends in Bordeaux, I thought I should give you my impressions. I always describe the city is being bourgeois (sp) in all the best senses of the word.
It%26#39;s a place where you see a lot of family interaction. I love sitting in one of the outdoor cafes in the afternoon to see the mothers taking their children for an after-school treat while on the daily grocery trip. It reminds me of when I was a child.
I think that you might find the city rather like Auckland with a French accent. A little more traditional than many American cities, but comfortable, courteous and easy going.

Thanks for your feedback 1BCTraveler. I found Bourdeaux a beautiful place when I visited 20 years ago. Have you had a number of trips to South Western France?
For this trip we will probably not look to stay in a major city though, as I am thinking to really be a part of France we will probably be looking at a smaller surrounding town to main hubs like Bourdeaux, La Rochelle or St. Nazaire. Thanks again.
