The search for a church/cathedral

Hi, I hope someone can help. 6 years ago I visited a church or cathedral which had a chapel in it with a relic hanging on the wall, and an atmosphere that I can only describe as %26#39;holy%26#39;. It was in a square (with cafes and, I think, a fountain) in a beautiful medieval vieux ville - very small streets.

It was not in a village perche (sorry can%26#39;t do the accents) and the area surrounding the old town was not very interesting. On the edge of the old town was a lovely little gallery in what I think was a family home.

It wasn%26#39;t a very long drive from Nice.

Earlier this year I went to Vence, because I thought that%26#39;s where it was. It wasn%26#39;t. I don%26#39;t think it was in St Paul de Vence (we had to park too far away).

I%26#39;m going back there in a few weeks with my son and I%26#39;d love to revisit that church. Can anyone suggest where it might have been?

Many thanks

DAvid

Grasse? Biot? Haut de Cagnes? Villeneuve?

Not Grasse, as I went there. I don%26#39;t recall Biot, but I seem to recall it wasn%26#39;t far from Cagnes sur Mer, so maybe Haut de Cagnes. Villeneuve is also a possibility. Thanks for your suggestions I%26#39;ll do some more detective work.

Perhaps Valbonne? The town has a beautiful old church that%26#39;s on a kind of square, with the rest of the town going up a slight hill to the left.

You might want to post your question on the Fodor site as well as here.

Thanks - I%26#39;ll take your advice. I%26#39;m fairly sure it isn%26#39;t Valbonne, nor Haut de Cagnes (the place I visited didn%26#39;t have any real stepps around the old town. It was pretty much on the same level. I seem to remember it was a walled town, though.

This is driving me nuts, but I%26#39;m determined to solve the mystery!

Thanks for your help.

There aren%26#39;t all that many walled towns in the area you are considering. But up in the hinterlands above Nice are a number of small towns that might fit the bill, if you think you went in that direction.

Yes, it was up above Nice, but the thing that puzzles me is that many of those are perched and this one wasn%26#39;t. I keep going on web-sites for churches or galleries, and I think I%26#39;ve tried most places now - I%26#39;m starting to wonder if I imagined the whole thing!

One (probably) final suggestion: try the AngloRiviera web site for local folks.
