My friend%26#39;s sister will be staying here and we were thinking of spending a few days in Besancon or visiting the surrounding areas, perhaps visiting some little towns or wineries? Does anyone know anything about this area ? What is there to do and see? Are there any places between there and Paris we should stop for on the way? Also how long will it take to get there from Paris and what is the best mode of transportation ? Any advice would be great because we have NO IDEA !! :) Thanks !!

My advice would be to get the Michelin Green Guide for the region that includes Besançon and begin deciding what you want to see. You should be able to take the train for a fair amount of your trip.

There is a very cool castle, which is scarily perched on the cliff edge. When I went many years ago it also had a mini zoo. You are fairly close to the border of Switzerland, so you could head over for a day trip. Or spend time in the Jura mountains, which are attractive.

1) How to get there from Paris? The TGV (high speed train) travels to besancon 2 or 3 times a day in 2hrs35 mins, through Dijon.
2) Anything worth seeing between P %26amp; B? Plenty, of course, but mainly Burgundy and its vineyards, Dijon itself and - certainly - Beaune and its splendid historic old hospital
3) Besancon itself is a very attractive little town. It is not far indeed from Switzerland (2 hrs away by road but not easy to reach by train), close to the Jura wine country (much smaller than Burgundy and not so well-known, but producing unique wines). It is also at the heart of area of production of one of the best-loved of all French cheeses, COMTE, which is fairly similar to Swiss gruyere but, of course, much better!
4) In winter (which comes later every year) good skiing is to be had within easy distance (without going all the way to the Alps), and in summer canoeing, angling, rock-climbing or cross-country biking.
5) The relevant edcition of the Michelin Green guide referred to by one of your respondents would be %26quot;Jura%26quot; or possibly %26quot;Jura-Birgundy%26quot;.
Enjoy yourselves!
