Montmartre - Urgent Help Please

We are travelling to Paris and have been looking at an apartment in PLACE BLANCHE, at beginning of MONTMARTRE. Told that Pigalle area is 500 metres east of this and that we will be ok. Does anybody know anything about this street - apartment looks very nice. Also are major sights easily accessible from there.

Many thanks.

Place Blanche is OK, though with much traffic-noise. Moulin Rouge is in Place Blanche, so there will be many tourists coming and going all night long. Rue Lepic wiht all the delicious food shops, take-aways, delicatessen and bakeries goes uphill from Place Blanche, so that in 5 minutes you are up in the old Montmartre-village.

If I were you I would look for an apartment a little more uphill - that is away from all the traffic, noise and hubbub in the blvd. de Clichy and Place Blanche.

Don%26#39;t worry about what you have heard about the %26quot;Sodoma and Gomorra%26quot;-state of affairs in Place Pigalle. They are WILDLY exaggerated. Yes, there are stripjoints and pornshops and it is the working field for ladies of the night - and so what ? Look the other way and you will be fine. It is not violent or dangerous or anything like that at all.

I suggest you take a look at the Montmarte apartments of

www.perfectlyparis.com

and

www.lodgis.com

(Lodgis gives a really good idea about the area in which the apt. is located, as there are photos from the neighbourhood).

You will love Montmarte - it is heavily touristy around Place du Tertre, but at the eastern and nothern side of the hill (Rue des Abbesses, Rue Lepic, Avenue Junot etc.) the old artists%26#39; village is as good as intact.

Watch the first 3 episodes of %26quot;Mistrals Daughter%26quot; and you will get a pretty good (rather romanticized) picture of how Montmartre still looks.

Thanks GitteK.

I am thinking I will give Montmartre a miss. Will try to look for an apartment in Latin Quarter, etc - somewhere more central.

Need an apartment for 5 and one for 2 or else a large one to sleep all for 3 nights - finding it a bit difficult as some renters have a 4 night minimum policy.

As a local, I personnaly see Montmartre as a tourist trap. Though there are still a few nice narrow streets %26quot;relatively%26quot; unspoiled.

Place Blanche would be noisy and, if safe, well...not so nice.

A drawback of the area is that is is relatively far, in terms of public transport, from the center and major sights.

Quartier Latin is central, lively, nicer...and is the place where I try to have friends stay when they ask me for a hotel. Notre-Dame and the Louvre are within walking distance, nice small shops abound...

The only bad point is that, being central and convenient, hotel prices stiffly went up over the past 10 years. I don%26#39;t know the situation as for appartments, but hopefully you can find something nice at a decent price.

Didierz: And you don%26#39;t see the %26quot;Latin%26quot; quarter as a tourist trap ?!!!

Try taking a stroll down Rue de la Huchette for starters - and you will run screaming back to Avenue Junot in a lightning.....

we are staying in the rue lepic area right this moment.

The blanche metro stop just down the road, the moulin rouge a good guide for when we get lost.

the metro is easy to use and we have been in and out of the city.

the shops are very handy and have everything you need.

sure lots of strip shops and nude shows but hey it is a busy area.

I think that any area is %26quot;central%26quot; if you have quick access to the Metro. My first choice when going to Paris is always Montmartre because so much of it looks like old Paris. It%26#39;s always a pleasure to wander around the neighbourhood looking for someplace for dinner, and even though I am most often alone in Paris, I have never felt unsafe there.

Amen and Halleluja to that !!

Place blanche is fine. Noisy maybe at times and lively like Paris should be.

In Paris there is a wonderful product at the pharmacy called boules quies. Many Parisians use them in their ears. BTW Pigalle is fine too. This is city life!

PS I would not recommend Quartier Latin to friends as it is a young on a budget crowd that goes there and they tend to party hard and be loud at all hours and on any day of the week. One of my friends lived on rue de la Harpe and had to leave after a while.
