Best way to book dinner reservations?

Ok, last week I sent 2 emails in English to 2 Parisian restaurants enquiring about dinner reservations. I still haven%26#39;t received any reply from either though. They were both fairly nice restaurants with English on their websites, so I don%26#39;t think language was a problem. Even if nothing was available, I%26#39;d at least expect some sort of reply.





Anyway, do you think it might be better to call them directly or email my hotel to see if they can book the reservations for me?

of course its better to make a call, thats the best solution. and i wouldnt trust the hotel too much, you never know they might forget it happens often.

Unfortunately, the French don%26#39;t seem to take email seriously as a form of communication (this is a problem I have also had in Spain). You are better off ringing to book.





In my experience, most restaurants do not take booking except for national holidays. The exception are restaurants where you need to book at least 6 months in advance. If the restaurant does not have a reservations system online it is a fairly safe bet that reservations aren%26#39;t needed.

wizard thats not true at all. ive been to many restaurants that were not gastronomic at all and you need a reservation (for most of the places) except in very touristic areas. but it doesnt cost anything to call and check, because lots of restaurants are on reservation, and unless they have a free table that was not reserved you wont be able to have diner there. but its true there are many small restaurants in touristy areas that dont need reservations, and lots of bistrots/brasseries. but if you want to go to a special restaurant call them.

I have only booked a table once, and I have never eaten at a touristy restaurant.. I guess I have been lucky! (the one time I DID book, the restaurant was half empty)





Mind you - just because a restaurant isn%26#39;t %26quot;gastronomique%26quot; doesnt mean that it cant be popular and trendy and booked for months ahead - trendy food and trendy restaurants has got nothing to do with the food............

Unless I am dinning in a cafe or very casual establishment, I always call in advance. This simple courtesy is always appreciated by the proprietors.

the gastronomic part was an answer to your reply %26quot;The exception are restaurants where you need to book at least 6 months in advance%26quot; (usually restaurants you have to book 6 months on advance are gastronomic ones no?). i just meant that the restaurants i go to are not gastronomic and dont need 6 months in advance res but they do need a day or 2 before reservations.

oh for trendy restaurants i book like 3 to 6 days in advance, especially if its for a friday or a saturday, but even lots of trendy restaurants are very big and you can get a table for 2 the same day (but if you are a big group well then its more difficult)

I would disagree with %26quot;usually restaurants you have to book 6 months on advance are gastronomic ones no?%26quot; Usually I find the food at trendy restaurants leaves a lot to be desired - they are more about the decor and %26quot;scenes%26quot; than the food.





Most of the restaurants I eat at get confused if you try to book. The exception are Muchelin star restaurants, which are a very rare treat.

yeah i never said that trendy restaurants = good food, but that the ones you have to reserve a lot in advance are gastronomic (i mean michelin stars, for ex jules vernes i had to book 5 months in advance so just didnt go). in paris ive been to lots of trendy restaurants when they just started or were already well known (as hype fashion whatever) and i never needed more than a week for a 2 or 4 persons table. apart from the michelin starred restaurants i dont see those you need to reserve in advance.

Do you I%26#39;ll still be able to book tables for the first week of October at places like: Le Grand Vefour,Taillevent, or L%26#39;Espadon?
