I would like to know why on a tomb there were many childrens shoes inline directly on top of this tomb inside the Cathedral .
Is there a religious meaning to this ?

It%26#39;s the sarcophagus of St Erkembode (Erkemboden in English). He was a Benedictine bishop of Therouanne, near St Omer, in the 8th century.
I came across two reasons for the tradition of leaving shoes:
- Pilgrims came in droves to visit his tomb, and some left their worn-out footwear as an offering after having walked a long way.
- He was reputed to have the power of curing malformations of the foot, particularly for children, and illnesses of bones.
It%26#39;s a rather moving sight, isn%26#39;t it?
