Hello France Experts, I was hoping someone could tell me where one gets a ferry to and from when staying in London to get as close to Normandy in France. I would like to take a car on the ferry. Does anyone know how much that would cost? Also would it be cheaper to just drive from London to Normandy? Is that possible?
Thanking you in advance.

To start at the end, you can%26#39;t drive from England to France. With Eurotunnel, www.eurotunnel.com/ you drive your car onto a train to go through the Channel Tunnel from Folkestone to Calais. The cheapest channel ferry crossings are generally Dover area to Calais area. www.seafrance.com and //www.poferries.com are the major operators but if you google something like %26#39;channel ferry crossings%26#39; there are others. It%26#39;s a relatively easy drive down the autoroute to Normandy (distances on viamichelin.com).
Direct ferries to the Normandy area go from ports further west along the coast. www.brittany-ferries.com are the main operators, but again I think there are others. For foot passengers, Portsmouth is probably the most convenient port from London.
You can check prices online - they vary depending how convenient a time you want. If you have a UK hire car, there may be a surcharge for taking it abroad, and you%26#39;ll also be driving on the %26#39;wrong%26#39; side of the road - it would be sensible to consider returning a UK car and renting another in France.

The shortest crossing is Dover to Calais. Caliais is about 2 hour drive from northern Normandy on the motorways which you have to pay for. For more information do a route plan on via mitchelin which will tell you the total cost.
The cheapest ferry companies are Norfolk Line which goes into Belgium so not an option or Speedferries which run between Dover and Boulogne (thirty minutes drive shorter than Calais).
The other routes that go direct to Normandy are:
Newhaven to Dieppe
Portsmouth go to Caan %26amp; Cherbourg..
For further details see www.ferrybooker.com for prices and a route map.
Both Newhaven and Portsmouth have direct trains to London see http://nationalrail.co.uk/index.html for times, routes and prices.
Hope that helps
