We leave for Avignon this Friday and had planned on renting a car during our stay there. It just struck me - will my US driver licence work to get a car rental? or do I need an international licence? I dont have time now to get one..

All you need is the USA Licence and a passport and a credit card. That was all we needed.

You do not need an international driver%26#39;s license to drive in France. Your US license is sufficient.
What you may want to do before you leave is rent a car. Car rentals in France are very expense compared to those in the US, particularly rentals of fewer than 4 days. Renting in advance can save a lot of money. There has been a great deal written here on the forum about renting a car and a quick forum search could yield much valuable information. Here are a few quick guidelines:
1. Call now, try Avis, AutoEurope, Europe by Car, or any other rental company with which you like to do business and discuss rates.
2. You US auto insurance is probably invalid in France. Check with your credit card company to insure what insurance may be included with a rental charged to its card. I do not purchase insurance which is already covered by my credit card. Rental car company insurance is very expense and often has very high deductibles.
3. Insist upon a diesel automobile, it will save a lot of money in operating expenses.
