Hi
I am looking for a winter skiing resort in france for my son and his friends. I am not familiar with any regions in france and would greatly appreciate the help anybody can give.
They are wanting to ski and snowboard and will want a resort that has a good night life for young people. They have been to Italy and found it to expensive whwn they was there, and last year Andorra but they do not want to go back there and fancied some where different.
Thanks

If Italy seemed expensive, I guess you could rule Chamonix out. It does have excellent post ski activity which might justify the cost. However, the terrain in Cham is pretty advanced. Any novice or intermediate skiers might struggle. Down the valley from Cham is Megeve with less radical slopes. l%26#39;Alp d%26#39;Huez is a favorite of mine with pretty good night life. It pulls a young crowd from Grenoble. La Clusaz is another favorite if mellow terrain is what you seek. Night life is pretty mellow, but better than some of the %26quot;ski only%26quot; areas that don%26#39;t have much of a village near by.
Or....Come to the US! I lived in Vail for a long time. There%26#39;s more lifts, more runs, more bars in Vail than in all of Austria!

Quitou
Having been to Vail I doubt that last statement.
But to return to the main question if they found Italy expensive then I doubt France is for them. You could look at threeof the main big resorts Val d%26#39;Isere/ Tignes, Trois Vallees (Courcheval, Meribel, Val Thoren) or Les Arcs/La Plagne. Skiing wise that should keep them going with a fair amount of Apres Ski as long as they choose the right place within the resorts. I suggest to go and get some brochures from a travel agent and start looking at what is available and then do a few google searches. I hope that helps you a little.

My Vail comment was intended to be cheeky. That said, I can%26#39;t imagine an area with more lifts or runs. Maybe Whistler.
Your suggestions are very good ones. I agree, if Italy was high expense, wait until you order a beer in Chamonix on a busy month!

You could try these web-sites to give you some ideas of where they might go in case the brochures are not out yet. The Ski Club of Great Britain site on www.skiclub.co.uk or else these www.igluski.com and www.ifyouski.com. The big ski areas do offer lots of skiing but of course the cost of ski passes reflect the number of lifts e.g. 143 lifts in Les Arcs/La Plagne although you can get a cheaper deal by just buying for one resort and buying a one day upgrade if you go over. Similarly the Trois Vallees pass includes 200 lifts and Espace Killey 82. So as I stated with so much on offer everything about skiing there is expensive. The first two weeks in January after the New Year week and a couple of weeks in March after the French school holidays finish are usually cheaper for accommodation

Rather than speaking to the Iglu - speak to a Ski specialist. Iglu, whilst they are huge due to their web presence, generally speaking the level of knowledge their sales consultants possess is not as high as other ski specialists. Try www.skisolutions.com or www.catered-ski-chalets.com as starting points for travel agents. Tour Operator wise - Crystal%26#39;s 2006/7 main brochure has just been released but most operators have their product on their website, try Ski Total, Skiworld, Neilson, Inghams etc.
Hope that helps

I found Iglu really helpful. I would recommend avoiding Skiline and then told me they %26quot;didn%26#39;t have time%26quot; to deal with me when I asked for a quote!
|||
Sorry, I didn%26#39;t mean my post to sound like I was slating Iglu. Just that as they have so many sales people it can be hit and miss in getting someone who will have much knowledge. Suprised about Skiline though - thought they would have been pretty good from a client%26#39;s point of view......Would love to know who at Skiline you spoke to though! I would give Ski Sol or Catered Ski a go tho.......
