hi I have found a good deal for a hotel in Montparnasse. Is this a good area to stay in? Are there nice restaurants/bars nearby and how far is it from the major sights? Thanks

I think it%26#39;s a great place to stay. If you can be more specific about you hotel, we can be more specific about nearby restos, etc.

Montparnasse is a large area and some places are closer to the %26quot;center%26quot; than others.
There are however many buses in front of the train station and also several metro stops there. I do not care for the metro system there at Montparnasse-Bienvenue stop as it is a huge station that requires a lot of underground walking.
I prefer to use smaller metro stops around there like Vavin, Notre Dame des Champs, Gaiete, Edgar Quinet etc. It all depends on your street address.
At any rates there are many cafes and restaurants there and you can walk to Luxembourg or Saint Germain.

I havn%26#39;t been in that area in years. Can you still take the lift up the tower and enjoy a coffee with the best view in Paris?

Hi I have actually booked hotel de nesle in St Germain. It looks very quirky! Any suggestions for good restaurants or bars in the area? Thanks
|||
Hi,
Hotel de Nesle is not Montparnasse at all, it is about 1 mile closer to the center. Much better! You are 10 minutes walk from Notre Dame, 5 minutes from the Louvre. The perfect spot.
The hotel is in a tiny street, and you will find dozens of bars and restaurants in the area.
Enjoy your stay!

Thanks Didierz. What would be your top 5 or 10 recommendations, when visiting Paris? Any fabulous restaurants that we must go to?

If you walk over to Montparnasse there is one road, Rue du Pot de Fer, which is pretty much one restaurant after another on both sides. It%26#39;s about 15 minutes from where you are.
Two good cafes: The Taverne Saint Germain, just down from Lipp%26#39;s has a lot of good beer on tap and the food is not too bad. And near the corner of the Rue Buci and Rue Des Anciens Comedies is a bar called Bar Du Marche which has the best French beer I%26#39;ve been able to find - Wilford Bruin (dark). This place fills up for most of the day even though it is within a square block with cafes on each corner.
And the Brasserie D%26#39;Isle Saint Louis just behind Notre Dame for Cassolet or charcrute.
Also in the area is the Relais Odeon which has Leffe Bruin (everyone else has leffe blond), and the Cafe Bonaparte just down from Les Deux Magots and a little less expensive.
