Hotel de la Porte Doree

Hi

This trip to Paris, we are a bit more budget minded because the %26quot;teens are coming (2).%26quot; I found this hotel online and it really looks very nice for the $$ (2 rooms are what we have in mind). Has anyone stayed here?

Thank you...I appreciate your advise.

Hello,

Seems to me someone on this site did stay there and wrote up something on it..........probably more than a year ago. You might try a search for it here.

Have gone by this hotel often and it looks very nice. The post I referred to also thought it was just great for the money, nice room, friendly staff. The street is a busy one, avenue Daumesnil, so you might not want to stay on the street side. If they have double windows you would probably be ok, unless it is summer and you would need them opened. It is actually set back from the traffic street on a tree lined sorta %26quot;service%26quot; road.

It is a pretty convenient area for getting buses and metros to almost anywhere in the city and is close to the large and lovely parc de Vincennes/ lac Daumesnil and the zoo. All local type stores you might like in the neighborhood cafes, restaurants (several excellent ones), bakeries, flower shops, just about every kind of individual store........ even a fair sized Monoprix and a couple fairly large super markets nearby. Place Felix Eboue (metro stop Daumesnil) is very beautiful with large lions fountain and pool surrounded by lovely early 1900%26#39;s apartments. Also a pretty large street market right on the place once or maybe twice a week.

Not in the middle of the big %26quot;tourists%26quot; area but it has a flavor all its own.

No experience staying there, but noticed that it is further removed from tourist areas (maybe what u want?). If this is the teens first visit you may want to look for something more central in the single digit Arrs.1,4-7.

The Rue Cler area (7) has a lot of budget hotels. Check Rick Steves site, search charming hotels in Paris sites, also Homer 12345 has a current thread re budget hotels in the 60-75E range. Maybe you can still find something a little more convenient for the price.

Bea: I have this hotel on my list - for the rates and for the excellent reviews it always gets. I loved you description of the neighbourhood, just my kind of place. And I suppose that a %26quot;real%26quot; vibrant Parisian neighbourhood with %26quot;real%26quot; French people in it will appeal more to the teens than the 7th arr. packed with the Rick Steves-crowds - and for variation: the haughtylooking high ranking civil servants in black suits and attaché briefcases from all the ministries and other French state offices in the 7th arr.

Thank you both for your replies

My boyfriend is actually from Paris, so the neighborhood might be a bit more appealing for a change than actually staying in the midst of the action. This will be my fourth trip.

I think he could get us around town blindfolded, and I might also enjoy the change of scenery, being on the outskirts.

The hotel just looks so charming for a lower star rating, and the reviews almost seem too good to pass up.

The children will be happy anywhere that serves %26quot;fries and coke.%26quot;

Thanks again

PaulaSue: It seems that the neighbourhood is extremely kid-friendly, as there is a McDo just on the opposite side of the street. You will not have to look far for %26quot;fries and coke%26quot; !

Quote from a hotel review:

%26gt;%26gt;The breakfast is good, and if you want a cheap alternative, there is a Macdonalds across the road with 1.99 euro Egg McMuffins%26lt;%26lt;

Yeahhhhhhhh

Thank you!

Bea, if you check back here, I just wanted to say that I really enjoy your posts. I%26#39;ll be staying in the 12th, and you%26#39;re part of the reason I%26#39;m so excited about this section.

We stayed there last week and I LOVED the hotel. I%26#39;ll be doing a write up on it soon. The neighborhood was wonderful, and if you speak a little French, you%26#39;ll often find the people in the stores, laundromat, and such will speak back at some point in English.

There is a Monoprix, Franprix and Ed store within a 10 minute walk in various directions. The laundromat - very easy to use - was within a 5 or so minute walk. There is a wonderful boulangerie across the street with fabulous pastries (they were closed the Monday and Tuesday mornings we were there, unfortunately!) My new favorite restaurant is the Villa Romana restaurant that is just a one minute or less walk from the hotel front door (maybe 30 seconds). They were very well priced, the food was great (the small pizzas were terrific!) and the owner had an English menu if we needed it, and even gave ice to my husband - which we didn%26#39;t ask for. Another evening, the owner prompted a server to give my hubby ice (he drinks soda). Ice is almost unheard of, so that was really nice. The last evening, the owner was there - so we didn%26#39;t get ice, but great service nonetheless.

Nothing was that far by metro. The longest it took us was like 25 minutes to the Eiffel Tower. Maybe 15 minutes to the Louvre. If you count stops, it%26#39;s about 1 minute per stop (sometimes a tiny bit more - so 20 stops might be 25 minutes).

There is a wonderful park for strolling, jogging, etc. just a 5 minute or so walk from the hotel. It is a HUGE park, I never did make it to the Chateau Vincennes, which was further in I guess.

I won%26#39;t go back to the Quick - the cashier rung the amount we gave her wrong, and we lost 2 Euros (it didn%26#39;t help to take it up with the person who spoke some English, so we gave up on the restaurant altogether after that). But really, Villa Romana didn%26#39;t cost much more than getting fast food - and it was much better, with great service. You can get quick items to eat also at the Monoprix - like a baguette, some meat, etc. I bought small containers of cous cous, dessert items, Pom%26#39; Potes, and such.

The front desk was great at the hotel - though we were on the bottom floor, and one evening one of the guys had the TV very loud until maybe 11pm (I wear ear plugs, so not sure what time it actually went lower). I don%26#39;t know how the normal size rooms are, but we had a larger room, with queen bed and a small terrace for 76 Euros.

Originally, I really wanted an Eiffel Tower view room - but everything I checked online that looked like a budget hotel wasn%26#39;t really one (I know there are some, but quite frankly - I didn%26#39;t miss having the view). I can%26#39;t wait to go back to the Hotel de la Porte Doree%26#39;!

Your boyfriend is from Paris! Well then I would stay away from the crowds, and enjoy the neighborhood. Since you will not have to worry about how to get around, you will be fine, and the kids will get to see a true slice of life. This hotel then will only add to the charm.

I live two metro stations from Porte Dorée and I can confirm it is a charming and family -friendly neighborhood. Probably too quiet for first -timers but great for others. Do not miss the Bois de Vincennes as well as the Parc Floral.
