Restaurant and bar walk on Rue Oberkampf

We plan to visit the Oberkampf area one night. If possible, could you please recommend a walking itinerary for us, starting with a dinner at a restaurant in the area and bar hopping after? Which street intersection do we start and what time? Thanks in advance..

I%26#39;d suggest starting out at the Parmentier métro station at the intersection of rue Oberkampf and av. Parmentier. A Friday or Saturday evening would probably be best if you are looking for lively nightlife, Thursday being a distant third choice.

As for a restaurant, what kind of place do you have in mind and what sort of budget?

Thanks! I appreciate your help. French restaurant...Budget is 15E-20E prix fixte menu per person...Also, from the intersection, which way do we head up - North/East/West/South?

I%26#39;d suggest heading east on rue Oberkampf towards and past rue St. Maur. I think the %26quot;hottest%26quot; address is probably Cithéa on rue O. between rue St. Maur and rue Moret, but it all depends on what you are looking for. Others who are younger than I am may know more.

If you stroll up rue Oberkampf and don%26#39;t find the right place, back-track to rue St Maur and head north along it to rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud. There are a couple of bars along here that looked interesting, especially the one on the corner of rue St. M and rue J-P T. that had a very decent jazz combo playing last Saturday night. Round the corner heading west on rue J-P T. there was a place playing some fun rock-a-billy stuff, and we walked past a few other places that sounded interesting in the general area.

As for a meal, you might look at L%26#39;Estaminet on rue O, past rue St. M., I think at the corner of Impasse Gaudelet. decent menu and lots of folk obviously enjoying their meal in a very casual atmosphere. There is a café on rue O., very close to the intersection with rue St. M., I think called Café Justine, that had some decent plats on their menu board and was clearly popular with a lively and youngish crowd who didn%26#39;t seem to mind the loud music one bit. On rue J-P T. west of rue St. M. there is a nice looking place called Mémère au Piano with good traditional food and again crowded with happy-looking diners. A bit farther west on the same street is L%26#39;Autre Café, trendy but a bit more laid-back than Café Justine.

We had a quick and quite good meal at the last with very friendly service, only the frites being a bit disappointing. Have not eaten at any of the others, but L%26#39;Estaminet was recommended by someone I trust. Café Justine %26quot;looked%26quot; right to me and I flatter myself I have a good %26quot;eye%26quot; for a decent place. Mémère au Piano has some rave write-ups on a couple of French user review sites including mmmm.free.fr. I would happily try any of them.

A couple to avoid IMO are Occitanie right next to Café Justine, and Bistrot du Parisien on rue Moret. No particular reason, but again they just did not %26quot;look%26quot; right to me.

There are dozens of other places in the few blocks around the Parmentier métro station that look interesting, especially if you want to try something a bit more exotic — Korean, Antillaise, North African or whatever. Of the places I have mentioned, you would probably need reservations at M. au P. but not at any of the others. All of them should be within or close to your budget.

Enjoy!

The must see joint in the neighborhood is of course Café Charbon. A great former %26quot;bougnat%26quot; (a bistro where they actually used to sell coal, managed by people from the Auvergne), it is bo bo central. It%26#39;s crowded, so if you want to have a sit for dinner, (don%26#39;t expect high gastronomy, but it%26#39;s OK) come before 20h00. For a drink, anytime will do (you might have to stand at the bar though).
