Mont Saint Michel - How to get there?

How do I get to Mont Saint Michel without a car? Is it possible by train and bus?

Thanks in advance.

We went on a tour bus for the day. It was about 100 Euros each person. We left Paris at 7:00 am and returned about 10:00 pm.

We rented a car the last two times we went back to Mont St.Michel.

The train from Rennes takes you as far as Pontorson, 9km from Mont St. Michel. You can take bus #15 to Saint Michel from the station. By car: From Caen use A84 to Le Mont Saint-Michel.

SNCF also offers a direct train to Mont St. Michel in the summer time.

Do a search on the search engine %26quot;Dog Pile%26quot; put in the words %26quot; How to get to Mont St. Michel by train and bus%26quot; Many sites come up with information for you.

This is a web site for side trip directions from Paris that I love! It tells you how to get to all the great sites via question and answer!

I have been to Mont S.M. 12 years ago, so I don%26#39;t recall the details - but I would love to go back next summer and stay for a night in the island. I do not remember if it is at all possible to stay the night in the island itself ?

Discover or others: did you notice any hotel in the Mont S.M. island - or does one have to leave in the afternoon when the tide comes in ?

%26quot;Gitte%26quot;:

Yes, there are hotels on the Mont.

If you are going next summer try to do a search for them now! I will go see if I can find out names. They fill up by January!!!! At least that is my experience!

It is so crowded during the summer there! If you stay there on the Mont you can do the visiting before the elbow to elbow crowds arrive or late when they are leaving!

I just love that place! My embroidered Tee shirt is just about worn out!!!! I wanted to go back but hubby doesn%26#39;t love it like I do! I have been there many times and never get enough of it!

Gitte: The Mont is not really an island there is a road to it and the road doesn%26#39;t go under water when the tide goes in and out..

The government is going to dredge the sand to try make it more of an island but it is not really an island now.

You can walk out the road where the car park is and there is a little town with dining establishments. I like the food on the Mont as well.

Gitte: Here is the web site :

I liked the La Mere Poulard place and the food there is very good. Just my opinion!

Discover - thank you so much, dearest !

In the meantime I also searched for hotels in this site - and I also found the Mère Poulard. I know about the acces to the %26quot;island%26quot; - when we were there, there was this Brit who had parked his car down on the sand. And in the afternoon when they rung the bell for the tide, he didn%26#39;t come back !! (Our car was safe up on the embankment) - the water crept closer and closer to the poor Brit%26#39;s Renault - and many spectators gathered of course. And THEN suddenly the guy came hurling down the road in panic and saved his car in the nick of time !! (The water ahd then reached half way up the tyres !)

I will never forget the garden courtyard up at the monastery with a look to the sea - I believe it is listed as one of the marvels of this world. Also the refectorium has an awesome atmosphere.

I would take the TGV train from Paris and then the bus - and stay for the night. Have you any idea about how much the train ticket from Paris to Rennes would cost ?

By train + bus

There are no direct train services between Paris and Mont St Michel, but rail travel to the island is nonetheless feasible. The best option is the TGV from Gare Montparnasse to Rennes, where a bus run by Les Couriers Bretons (tel. 02-99-19-70-70; www.lescourriersbretons.fr ) provides a 75 minute transfer to the island (there are 2-5 departures from Rennes per day, depending on seasonal demand - most departures are timed to match to the arrival of the TGV in Rennes). The bus station is immediately outside the Rennes train station, at a bus terminal building on your right, after leaving the station by the north exit. The bus costs 10.10 Euro, with a reduction to 8.10 for people under 25. Bus tickets are sold by the driver when boarding the bus, not in advance at the bus terminal.

When returning with the bus, the driver might ask if you have a reservation for the TGV to Paris and give priority to people who have one.

Another option is to take a TGV train to the Pontorson-Mont St Michel train station, with a stopover in Rennes. The Pontorson train station is no more than 15 minutes from Mont St. Michel. Buses are available several times a day. You can get a schedule from the Pontorson train station.

Gitte: We drove so I do not know how much the train costs. Maybe Morgan B has it on the train thread.
